Bevk Square is today the liveliest town area, which gradually developed: first the buildings in the southern part of the square were built and then those in the northern part. Here the Cultural Centre is located, which was opened in 1980. The urban plan from 1959 envisaged siting the square right at this location. By closing the former Lenin Street for traffic in 1983, the Bevk Square obtained the size it has kept until now. In 1992, it was named after the writer France Bevk, whose statue (the work of Boris Kalin) was erected in the nearby park in 1974. One of the most interesting buildings on the square is the former Meblo exhibition and sales point, opened in 1970 by the furniture factory from Nova Gorica bearing the same name, which used to be one of the largest in Slovenia. The building is one of the architectural icons of the Slovenian modern architecture designed by the architect Kamil Kolarič. The square took on its current appearance when it was renovated in 2014. Pebbles incorporated in the pavement show that Nova Gorica is a town located by the Soča River.
