Municipal Palace
The Municipal Palace was built from 1949 to 1953 on the main square of the new town, according to the plans of Vinko Glanz, who also designed the Slovenian Parliament building. The palace represents one of his first works implemented after World War II. It was planned as a monumental multifunctional public building with abundant building furniture and artistic elements, and has always served as a seat of administrative and political local authorities. As the only public building in Nova Gorica for a long time, it soon became a cultural and social hub of the town. The meeting hall on the ground floor was used as a cinema, where they also organised music events, dances and social evenings, the hall in front of it served as an exhibition space, and the offices temporarily hosted a study library, an archive, a bank and a post office. From its very beginning, its exterior was used as a setting for important gatherings and events, which took place in the immediate vicinity, and the place has always been a dominant architectural feature in the space and the symbol of an emerging new town.
