Exhibition "GO S50-60: City and Residents in the 1950s and 1960s" is based on a photographic collection held by the Ethnology Department of The Regional Museum Goriški muzej. The main source is the archive of the Photo Studio Pavšič Zavadlav, supplemented by the photographs of Mirko Ličen - Prepih and photographs contributed by the city's residents as part of the initiative "Building the City", which we carried out in 2016 in the »France Bevk Public Library« in collaboration with the Provincial Archives of Nova Gorica.
The exhibition on the second floor is divided into five sections. In the entrance area, visitors are introduced to the history of Nova Gorica through text by architect and urbanist Tomaž Vuga, and scanning the QR code provides further insights into the city. The photos show the construction area before 1950, while the others show the view of the emerging Nova Gorica from Kostanjevica.
In the central hall, we immerse ourselves in the city's panoramas, where we have added current photographs from the same perspective to ten archival images. The left tower showcases primarily the public life of children and youth, highlighting schools and leisure time. This space is equipped with a school desk, chairs and a board where visitors can share their memories. In the right tower, adult residents are presented in their daily lives and work, there is also the Gondola recliner, produced by the Meblo factory and designed by Oskar Kogoj. In a separate room, there is a reconstruction of a living room from the 1960s, accompanied by photographs depicting celebrations and domestic scenes.
Based on the wishes and suggestions of visitors, in June 2023, we created a new room entirely dedicated to sports and motor racing. Without the help of all those who responded to our additional call for collecting materials, we would not have been able to exhibit so many photographs and objects. The exhibition also includes archival footage that, through carefully selected scenes, conveys the pulse of the city from the beginning of its construction until the early 1970s. As a special addition, we have made unique color recordings of auto-moto races from the late 1960s available to the public.
The exhibition is complemented by a 1:10 scale replica of the monument to Edvard Rusjan and a model of Nova Gorica made of blocks. This makes the exhibition partially accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals.
All of this contributes to the rich experience of the exhibition "GO S50-60: City and Residents in the 1950s and 1960s," providing us with insight into the history of Nova Gorica and the life and events of that period.
