Biedermeier Living Room of the Coronini Counts
The exhibition is part of the project Marcello Mascherini, a sculptor among poets and writers of the twentieth century, promoted by the Archivio Marcello Mascherini in partnership with the Goriški muzej.
It includes several events that began this summer, with the exhibition at the Art Gallery of Portopiccolo in Sistiana (Italy) and will conclude on January 31, 2025 with the symposium at the University of Trieste and the publication of the speakers' researches.
For this exhibition we selected some of Mascherini's works and included them in the permanent art collection, placing them in dialogue with the paintings and sculptures preserved by the Goriški muzej. The bronze portrait of the illustrator from Trieste Renata Piccolo is placed next to the almost contemporary painting with the portrait of the scientist Ana Mayer Kansky. The two preparatory drawings with the portraits of the poet from Grado Biagio Marino and the famous Irish writer James Joyce have been added to the official full-length portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph.
The bronze Bather was instead placed in the central hall, next to the canvas depicting the Abduction of Europa by Vladimir Makuc and the marble sculptures with the titles Spring and On the Beach by Boris Kalin.
Marcello Mascherini had personal and artistic partnerships with several writers and poets who published their reflections on his works, the sculptor vice versa illustrated several collections of poems and literary works. A selection of these publications is displayed in the two cases in the atrium, with drawings and photographs of works exhibited in the nearby rooms, which are instead accompanied by quotes from a selection of poets and writers.
The project is funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. In addition to the Marcello Mascherini Archive and the Goriški muzej, the partners are also the University of Trieste, the Municipality of Duino-Aurisina, the Municipality of Azzano Decimo and the Trieste Association of Friends of the Museums “Marcello Mascherini”.
