Avgust Černigoj, his companions and students
Biedermeier Living Room of the Coronini Counts
The exhibition presents works by Avgust Černigoj from the collection of the Goriški muzej, and is complemented by works from other institutions and private collections, so that the most important phases of the artist's work can be highlighted.
The exhibition is divided into two parts, the first (the left tower) one highlights the significant moments of Černigoj's artistic development, the beginnings, the constructivist period and the later period. Constructivism can only be presented with replicas of objects and engravings, since the originals from that period have not survived. Our collection also includes a drawing by Giorgio Carmelich, who collaborated with Černigoj and Emilio Mario Dolfi in organizing the art school in Trieste, and a constructivist drawing by Milko Bambič, who was connected with Černigoj, but did not officially join the group. From that period we were also able to exhibit two original constructivist drawings by Eduard Stepančič, a student of Černigoj and his most important collaborator in the design of the Constructivist Hall in Trieste. In our collection we also keep Černigoj's self-portrait from 1926. This drawing is also exhibited on the first floor, but it is included in the permanent collection, in the room dedicated to portraits and self-portraits of artists.
In the second part of the exhibition (the right tower), Černigoj's works are placed in dialogue with his students, who, each with their own individual work, have established themselves in the artistic field. But the teacher's encouragement to experiment and find new ways of expression is reflected through their creative and research process. Their testimonies reflect Černigoj's dedication to teaching and, although he did not tell them about the Bauhaus and constructivism, he preserved the spirit of that time through his teaching approach. The works on display range from the figurative, with the virtuoso composition of Klavdij Palčič next to Černigoj's geometric figures, to the abstraction with engravings by Franc Vecchiet from the period when he became a student of Černigoj. With the pioneering prints by Edvard Zajec we enter the digital world, who realized the idea of art in time and space, which Černigoj aimed for in the avant-garde period. Emanuela Marassi's video pays homage in a contemporary way to the sea in her hometown, so close to Černigoj to, and at the same time remains faithful to the feminine themes and the feminist conception of her work. Finally, the showcase presents the art publication galerie IMAGINAIRE, with works by artists Patrizia Devidè, Barbara Strathdee, Franc Vecchiet and Edvard Zajec who pay homage to Černigoj, with texts by Krisztina Passuth and Laura Safred.
